It has been my experience that there are several factors that go into a good web site.
1. The site must be easy to navigate around in. No more than one or two jumps to get to where you want to go.
2. Good, well-written, concise content.
3. Visually attractive and other multimedia content like sound, motion graphics, videos, etc., but only to reinforce the written content of the site. It should not detract in any way from what the site is trying to say.
4. The written content, especially on the first page, must be written naturally, but in a way that keywords that users who may want to visit your web site can type in and find you. SEO is huge now, love it or hate it. The balance is trying to design a web site that expresses the message the client wants to convey, both written and in mutlimedia content while still allowing the client to get found.
It has been my experience that many of my clients love web sites that have a clean look to them, while having some room for creativity.
